More than 1,500 schools destroyed in al-Anbar province, Iraq

An Iraqi official announced that more than 1,500 schools were destroyed, "partially or totally" in Anbar province, one of the major Iraqi provinces, indicating that the majority of these schools are "directly targeted by" ISIS extremist organization.

An Iraqi official announced that more than 1,500 schools were destroyed, "partially or totally" in Anbar province, one of the major Iraqi provinces, indicating that the majority of these schools are "directly targeted by" ISIS extremist organization.

The spokesman of Anbar Provincial Council , Eid Ammash said in a press statement that "Anbar was hit hard , more than 1,500 schools were partially destroyed or totally" destroyed in this vast province, in which its borders extend to the border with Syria in the west to the gates of Baghdad to the east, which has witnessed heavy fighting since the beginning of 2014 even before the large-scale attack by the jihadist organization, that control on large parts of the country.

He explained that "the majority of these schools are targeted directly by ISIS terrorist groups.

He added that "the rest are places were used as bases of ISIS and were targeted by Iraqi forces and air force of the coalition, or they were simply located in combat zones."

The spokesman stressed that "after we retake Anbar from ISIS , we will need a lot of money and two and a half at least for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of these schools."

According to the latest statistics of the United Nations, more than 70% of children who have been displaced from their areas because of the fighting in Iraq are deprived of education.
