The Indian authorities on Monday lifted the curfew in most of the state Jammu and Kashmir state, which has been hit by clashes between the residents and police, local media reported, citing police.

According to The Indian Express newspaper, the curfew, which was in place for 52 days, will end in all Kashmir areas except the southern city of Pulwama and in two districts of the Shrinagar city.

"Following an improvement in the situation, there will be no restrictions in Kashmir Valley from tomorrow except town Pulwama and the areas falling under the jurisdictions of Police Station M R Gunj and Police Station Nowhatta,” a police spokesperson said late on Sunday, as quoted by newspaper.

The decision was made after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week.

In July, new sporadic clashes erupted after Indian security forces killed Burhan Wani, a commander of the separatist group Hizbul Mujahideen, outlawed in India, on July 8. The curfew was imposed the following day.

The number of victims in clashes has amounted to some 70 people to date, while over 8,000 people have been injured due to the violence in the region.
