Rights Group Says Jordanian Police Torturing Political Prisoners in Bahrain

- A Bahrain-based rights group said it had received complaints from families of political prisoners that say their sons have been brutally tortured by Jordanian police during detention.

In a statement released on Friday, Bahraini German Organization for Human Rights cited complaints by prisoners' families as saying that their sons in al-Hawd al-Jaff jail were mistreated, insulted, threatened and beaten by security forces.

The statement named the officers Issa al-Jawdar and Mohammad Abdul Hamid, saying they were responsible for the torture.

"Their sons have being beaten by Jordanian police on daily basis," the statement said, adding that the torture takes place in areas across the jail which are not equipped by surveillance cameras.

The Rights group also said that the tortured prisoners have been going on a hunger strike for six days.

The Bahraini German organization called on the jail administration to abide by international laws regarding prisoners' treatment, stressing that such acts prove the Bahraini authorities' role in the violations committed against prisoners in the country.

Bahrain has been witnessing since February 2011 pro-democracy protests. Many Bahrainis have been tortured or killed and hundreds more injured and arrested during the regime’s ongoing crackdown on peaceful demonstrations.

A number of Arab countries including Saudi Arabia and Jordan have dispatched their troops or police to Bahrain to intensify the government crackdown on the opposition.
